Where to Find Good Templates for Your Website

Any amount of surfing the Internet will uncover the vast east-west distance between web site designs.  From the simple and un-educated do-it-yourselfers to the very professional looking sites that have great ‘wow’ factors, you will come across all kinds.  So, how does one make a site look professional?

Experts Here?  Does it require one to become an expert in web design and HTML and CSS?  The short answer is ‘no’ because even though there is a certain level of knowledge required to make a website, the steps to moving it to professional-looking status are not far away.  Especially since there are things like CSS that make the road much easier than it used to be.

Say What?  The term CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets.  Basically, it is a method of embedding fonts, colors, and formatting into HTML text in order to interject professional looking elements that make up a website.  Actually, HTML is not the only language in which CSS can be used.  Also, there is XHTML, XML, SVG, and XUL.

Templates Save the Day.  Would not it be great if there were a source of templates from which one could choose so that making a professional website were not so laborious?  Well, you are in luck.  There are sites out there that feature FREE templates that you can download and paste into the HTML of your website to give it the look that you desire.

The thing that you might need to be aware of as you peruse the sites that provide free templates is that they might require you to keep the links alive at the bottom of the templates that point the readers back to their websites.  This is the way of perpetuating what they do.

There are also websites that will customize and create a template for you for a price.  These prices depend upon the complexity and difficulty in the programming.  Again, however, it is an easy way to make the look of your site ‘shine’ and give the appearance of a much larger organization than it is in reality.

The main caveat of using these templates is that some Internet browsers may not support some of the programming text contained therein.  This might mean that someone who visits your site might not see the site as you intended it to be seen.  But, with CSS standards in place, adoption by browser programmers has been widely recognized.

So the best thing to do is to experiment.  Even if you did not build your own site, you can and should be able to download the templates and submit them to the company that hosts your site and they should be able to put them in place for you.

Keep in mind that you should not go over-board in using templates.  Your site should not only be professional looking, but also should be easy to read and navigate.

Where to Find Them?  Here are some websites that feature templates for using on your own web pages some are free and others are not:
