How to Create Your Own Internet Forum In the ancient days of computing, you had what was called bulletin boards, where users came together to post comments about particular subjects, mainly relating to computers. This is because that most of the users at the time were technical types who had nothing better to do. But, now bulletin boards have been replaced with the forum. Many websites have a forum on which you can create a userid and interact with other forum users. Your postings are available to anyone to be seen and commented upon. Most forums and the websites that have them are for specific purposes. For example, forums for writers are popular places in which one can post parts of stories or articles and gain feedback from other writers. The possibilities are endless for the number of and purpose for these forums. There are two ways to create your own Internet forum. Create Your Own From Scratch. Simply because this was the first way of setting up a forum, it still exists today. But, this option is more difficult and time consuming. Here are the steps you will need to take: 1. Register a domain name or sub-domain name. 2. Download free forum software. You can get this from www.phpbb.com or www.simplemachines.org. Then, you will also need to get important modification software to add on from www.integramod.com. 3. Get a FTP client software which is used for uploading your PHP content to your site (host). 4. Create a MySQL database on your host site by logging on through the control panel. 5. Navigate to your site name (www.yourforum.yourhostsite.com/forumdirectory/install.php) to install and configure your forums. 6. Using your FTP client, go to config.php and properties to set the CHMOD settings to 666 (only for phpBB 2). 7. Complete the instructions found in install.php. 8. Now, go back to the config.php via FTP client and reset the properties in CHMOD to 644 (only for phpBB 2). 9. Delete the install and contrib directories. 10. Navigate to www.yourforum.yourhostsite.com/forumdirectory/index.php. 11. Login and proceed to the admin panel to customize your forums. Not exactly a walk in the park. In fact, you need to know things like: FTP, PHP, MySQL, and CHMOD mentioned above. This process is not as difficult as it used to be, believe it or not. A Better Way. Find a forum hosting service that includes the setup for you. The website www.worldcrossing.com is such a provider. With their control panel and tools, you can set up a forum that has these features: instant setup, public or private forum status, chat rooms, personal email, newsreader access, customization, administrative control through a control panel, message threads or linear conversations, unlimited participants, unlimited messages, embedded links, moderated forums and profanity filters, and a lot more. With all of this at your fingertips, the question becomes, why create forums any other way? There are a few things that you need to be aware of whether you create your own, or use a forum hosting service. First, you are more or less responsible for the content. While your policies should be clearly stated on your site, watch out for those who have nothing better to do than to post messages that are off-topic, off-color and off-beat. Be ready to delete and banish these users as needed. Next, forum software is vulnerable to hackers and attacks just like any other site. Discourage the posting of personal information, and try to keep users from posting their outside email addresses because of the email harvesters that peruse these sites. Forum hosting can be fun and useful for almost any purposed. Using it can build a strong community of like-minded users who can benefit greatly from each other’s input.
